Domestic Violence is gaining more attention as the violenceagainst women increases. The National Coalition AgainstDomestic Violence (NCADV) website states that 1 in 3 women have been victims ofsome form of violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.

Kalyn Risker Fahie is the Founder and Executive Director ofSisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (S.A.F.E), located in Detroit, MI.  Ms. Fahie has over ten years of experience inhuman resources. Kalyn is a sought after national speaker regarding economicstrategies for survivors of domestic violence for local, state and nationalconferences

She is a survivor of domestic violence and founded SAFE inMay 2006.  NCADV also states thatdomestic violence victims lose a total of 8 million paid work days each year.

Kalyn states, “Victims have no access to assets or their ownmoney. This is only one shelter in Detroit with 67 beds.” SAFE provides domesticviolence survivors with the financial tools needed to leave or recover from economicabuse. They also provide interviewing skills and resume writing.

SAFE host its signature Health & Wealth Expo and SAFE’sO.P.E.N. for Business Micro-entrepreneurship Conference for Survivors ofDomestic Violence, which provided resources and information to over 2,700community members. Hundreds of businesses have been established by theirclients through the program.

Kalyn provides four tips for women/men who are experiencing domesticviolence:

3.   Allstate insurance providesresources at www.clicktoempower.org

4.   Visit National Domestic Violencehotline 1-800-799-7233 or www.thehotline.org

Kalyn Risker, Founder/CEO of Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE), has a background in Human Resources. She knows first-hand the physcial, financial and emotional devastation caused by domestic violence. She turned her experience as a survivor into a business to help other women suffering the same plight. One in three women in the United States are victims of domestic violence. 

The 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization's mission is to equip survivors of domestic violence with the appropriate financial tools and resources needed to enable women to leave or recover from the economic portion of domestic violence. Over the past 8 years, SAFE has assisted 852 survivors of domestic violence through direct training, services, resources and referrals.  

SAFE’s 8th Annual Appreciation Fundraiser & Afterglow will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a special Afterglow Event immediately following until Midnight at the newly restored Detroit Historical Museum.
